Dutch phone maker Fairphone has announced it’s updating its six-year-old Fairphone 2 with Android 10. Fairphone has already kicked off Android 10 beta testing and aims to release the final build in early 2022.
The Fairphone 2 was announced in 2015 with Android 5.1 Lollipop and later picked up Android 6 Marshmallow, Android 7.1 Nougat, and Android 9 Pie updates. And once the final build of Android 10 is released, the Fairphone 2 will be the first Android smartphone to receive seven years of software updates, which is pretty impressive even though Android 10 is two years old since Apple is the only company that comes close to that kind of software support.
Our 6-yr-old Fairphone 2 is being upgraded to Android 10. That’s 7 years of software support! An industry first for an Android device! 🙌 Together with the open source community we built the operating system. Proving it is possible to put sustainability at the heart of tech. 🌿 pic.twitter.com/TuUjJWTi5J

Fairphone said it worked with Indian software developer Bharath Ravi Prakash for the Fairphone 2’s Android 10 update and completed the development in 10 months – that’s eight months less than the time it took for the Android 9 update.
The Fairphone 3 and 3+ were introduced in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The former came with Android 9 Pie out of the box, while the latter boots Android 10. You can read our Fairphone 3+ hands-on review here to learn more about it or watch the video below about its key features.
